What Is It Red Dye 40?
Red 40 is a certified color that comes from petroleum distillates or coal tars. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates that it should be listed by name on food and product labels. Additives that don’t need to be specified on labels are called “exempt.” These colorings are made from plant, animal, or mineral sources.

Per the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Red 40 and other AFCs can cause allergic reactions in some people. Research shows they can also cause hyperactivity in children (ADHD) and immune system tumors in mice. Red 40 contains p-Cresidine, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says is “reasonably anticipated” to be a human carcinogen.

One study found that Red 40 lowers reproductive success in rats. It also reduced parental and offspring weight, decreased brain weight, and lowered chances for survival in newborn rats. The authors said the colorant showed evidence of physical and behavioral toxicity in developing rats that consumed Red 40 as 10 percent of their diet. The Environmental Working Group lists the overall hazard level for Red 40 as low. Other entities claim it is highly toxic, most importantly because people are unaware of how much they are exposed to it.

Foods that aren’t red or orange can still include Red 40. You can find it, and other AFCs, in cheeses, peanut butter crackers, salad dressings, and marshmallows.

Splenda linked to leukemia risk

Sucralose (a.k.a. Splenda) hit the market just over 15 years ago with an ad campaign that made it sound as natural as sunlight and daffodils.
For anyone with a sweet tooth, it sounded like the perfect replacement for sugar.
By most accounts, it tasted better than its predecessors, aspartame and saccharine — and, as far as anyone knew, it didn’t have that long list of health risks associated with it, either.
Yes, it sounded perfect all right… a little too perfect.
And now, the bitter truth has finally come out: Sucralose might TASTE sweet, but what it can do to your body is anything but.
New research on mice once again links this sugar substitute to leukemia, with male mice in particular facing a higher risk of the disease, especially as the levels of sucralose in the diet increased.
According to the research published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health, the mice were given levels of sucralose that were, at times, high enough to equal what a human drinking 10 cans of diet of soda per day would be exposed to.
Now, most folks wouldn’t be able to drink that much sucralose in a day, but don’t take too much comfort in that. Something toxic at a high dose is usually pretty bad for you at a lower one, too — even if it’s not quite AS bad.
And with the growing number of other food products that are substituting sugar with Splenda, your daily intake of the stuff may be growing, too — in some cases, without you even knowing it.
And this is hardly the only time that cancer concerns have been raised.
In the wake of previous studies that found sucralose can cause leukemia and other forms of blood cancer in mice, the consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, which originally declared it “safe,” downgraded the fake sugar to “caution” earlier this year.
Now, the agency is urging consumers to avoid it — the same advice it gives for aspartame (brand name Equal), saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low), and acesulfame potassium (Sweet One), all of which have been linked to everything from migraines and cancer to DEATH.
The main source of those fake sugars, diet sodas, has even been linked to some of the very conditions people who drink them are trying to avoid: weight gain and diabetes.
And another study on both mice and humans found that ANY type of artificial sweetener at all can permanently alter the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut… and NOT in a good way. Folks who drink diet sodas have lower levels of helpful Clostridiales bacteria and higher levels of dangerous Bacteroides.
We see similar changes in diabetics.
The sad truth is that few sugar substitutes are safe, but if you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, try either xylitol or lo han.

The Cancer Fighting Medicine That’s Growing in Your Yard


As a child, you likely got a thrill out of picking its many fluffy seed heads from the yard and gently blowing them into the wind. As an adult, perhaps you’ve tried to eradicate it entirely to maintain the “perfect” lawn. Whatever your perception of the ubiquitous dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), science is revealing that this curious flowering plant (which many consider a weed) is actually a potent cancer fighting medicine that grows almost everywhere.

Believe it or not, dandelions are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and other healing nutrients that typically take a back seat to the plant’s reputation as a pesky weed. Dandelions have long held a top spot in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a remedy for digestive upset, inflammation, and kidney disease, boiling nicely into a healing tea.

Why Dandelion is a Cancer Fighting Medicine

Anecdotal reports of folks plucking dandelion from their yard, drying it, and grinding it up into an edible powder suggest that the root extract of this medicinal plant helps significantly boost immunity, which combined with its appetite stimulation properties is exactly what the body needs to prevent cancer development.

More recently, dandelion root has been a focus of study for its ability to improve liver and gallbladder function, as well as stimulate appetite. And right now, human clinical trials are taking place to evaluate how dandelion root extract might help in treating blood-related cancers, including lymphoma and leukemia.

Dandelion Root Extract Tested on 30 End-Stage Cancer Patients

Researchers from Windsor Regional Cancer Centre in Canada are confident in dandelion’s anti-cancer potential. Dr. Siyaram Pandey, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, announced in February 2015 that they had received approval and funding for human clinical trials. The team is testing a potent form of dandelion root extract on a group of 30 patients with end-stage, blood-related cancers.


The University of Maryland Medical Center also acknowledges dandelion’s immune-boosting capacity. The Center noted that the flower in particular possesses strong antioxidant properties, which is helpful in averting cancer. The root is likewise beneficial, as previously mentioned, in helping to detoxify the liver and gallbladder, as well as improve kidney function.

Earlier research by Dr. Pandey from the University of Windsor further illustrates the anti-cancer potential of dandelion. In otherwise untreatable pancreatic cancer (which is said to have close to a 100% mortality rate), dandelion root extract was found to induce programmed cell death, also known as apoptosis, in pancreatic cancer cells. It also killed leukemia and melanoma cancer cells in lab mice. Dandelion root extract similarly induced autophagy, a process by which the body maintains homeostasis through the proper elimination of damaged or malignant cells.

“We demonstrate that DRE (dandelion root extract) has the potential to induce apoptosis and autophagy in human pancreatic cells with no significant effect on noncancerous cells,” wrote the study’s authors in a 2012 report. “This will provide a basis on which further research in cancer treatment through DRE can be executed.”

And as you’ll see at the end of the article, they may even use essential oil as a treatment.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a natural modality that can help patients cope with chronic pain, nausea, stress, and depression.  It also has been used to stimulate the immune system, fight off bacterial infections, increase circulation, alleviate headaches, soothe sore muscles, and help you sleep at night.  Each oil is promoted to have specific health benefits, so patients must find the right oils for their health concerns.

They may use the oils in their practices to help relieve some of their patients’ pain and enhance their quality of life.  In the United States, you can buy the oils and a home diffuser yourself in order to self-administer your aromatherapy treatments.

Essential oils can be used individually or combined for maximum benefits.

Everyone has a unique body chemistry, so different oils may work differently on unique individuals.  For this reason, aromatherapy may take time to improve your symptoms.  You may need to try numerous oils and oil combinations before finding an oil or a combination of oils that truly works for you.

Once you find the right oils, they can be applied to your skin or inhaled.  For inhalation purposes, a home diffuser can be purchased.  A home diffuser utilizes water to humidify your home and add essential oils to your environment.

You may also add a few drops of essential oils to a steaming pot of water or to your shower each day in order to vaporize the oils and inhale them.

If essential oils are applied directly to your skin, then they may need to be applied along with a carrier oil.  Olive oil and coconut oil are both great carrier oils that can soak up the essential oils and help your body to absorb them properly.  You can also make your own creams or salves that contain essential oils to use on your sore muscles or any areas of your body that are painful.

What About Frankincense?

This article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning frankincense. For over 5,000 years frankincense (aka “boswelliaserrata”) has been used to support the immune system, fight infection and cure diseases. Yes, even cancer!

A 2013 study by University of Leicester researchers indicated that frankincense contains a compound AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) that targets cancer cells, including ovarian, brain, breast, colon, pancreatic, prostate, and stomach cancers.

According to researchers out of Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, frankincense helps regulate the cellular epigenetic machinery, which highlights its ability to influence genes to promote healing.   • 1/3 cup sundried tomatoes, chopped
  • 4 organic kale leaves (thoroughly washed), chopped
  • ½ medium red onion, julienned
  • 1 handful cilantro, rinsed and chopped
  • 1 organic yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2½ cups organic arugula, rinsed and chopped
  • 6 medium radishes, washed and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons raw organic pumpkin seeds

The Seven Most Acidic Foods


1. Cola/Soft Drinks:

Cola has to come in at number one and I could write a whole thesis on why. But let’s just touch on the main points as to why I quite literally never touch colas, lemonades, sports drinks and other fizzy, carbonated beverages. Full of sugar, chemicals, sweeteners and ingredients that are actually known and proven as being dangerous for human health (hello phosphoric acid).

2 Ice Cream:

All dairy is acidic (yes, milk is not good for you and doesn’t lead to stronger bones, it actually leads to weaker bones) but ice cream is the worst because it’s just so dense! Something that is always scary is the amount of something alkaline needed to neutralize a strong acid – the ratio is 20:1.

That means it takes 20 cups of something alkaline to neutralize 1 cup of a strong acid. Unfair isn’t it? This ratio is certainly true of milk – it would take 20 glasses of alkaline water to neutralize 1 glass of milk. Not good. But it actually works out that it would take twelve times as much, that’s 240 cups of something alkaline to neutralize ONE cup of ice cream! It’s that bad. Truly.

3. Sugar:

Sugar is sugar is sugar. It’s at the root of all acidity! Sugar is quite literally an acidic waste product that for acids in the body is like petrol on a fire

4. Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Fats/ Trans Fats:

As healthy as the healthy oils (omega 3, 6 and 9) are to the body, the wrong fats are devastating. We all know just how bad the bad fats are, and we’ve been told about them for many decades (clogged arteries, heart disease, cancer etc.). Animal fats, cheap vegetable oils, butter and (worse, much worse) margarine, Trans fats and a lot of saturated fats (coconut aside) are all absolutely shocking for our health.

5. Monosodium glutamate (MSG):

Monosodium glutamate, also known as sodium glutamate or MSG, is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, a nonessential amino acid. Even though it was classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) the FDA still stated that:

“Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and that there are glutamate-responsive tissues in other parts of the body, as well. Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s chorea. Injections of glutamate in laboratory animals have resulted in damage to nerve cells in the brain.”

 6. Yeast:

Having too much yeast in the body is predominantly the most acidic thing we can do, and also the biggest cause of acidity! When we consume yeast, it’s like we’re throwing acid after acid into our body. The outcome of this is that your body is constantly in a state of absolute acidity and the worst thing is the consumption of yeast and the body’s production of yeast is a vicious cycle – the more yeast we throw in, the more yeast we have in our system and the more acids the growth of these yeasts creates, which then feeds the yeast to grow further.

7.  Sweeteners:

I’ve kept this broad as ‘all sweeteners’ because they’re all pretty bad, even the natural ones. BUT from here on presume I’m talking about the super-commercial artificial ones (not the stevia types). If you use these sweeteners in your daily diet – please stop ASAP! They’re SUCH bad news for your health! And worse still, many are truly not proven as safe for human consumption.

In clinical trials, pectin, contained in apple cider vinegar, has been shown to slow the growth of cancerous cells within the prostate. Apple cider vinegar cleanses the colon, which also supports a healthy prostate.

Weight Loss

Vinegars of all kinds have been used for a very long time as a weight-loss aid because they help make you feel full. A study found that participants who ate a piece of bread with apple cider vinegar felt fuller than those who ate the bread alone.

In another study, overweight Japanese participants were grouped based on body weight, body mass indexes and waist size. Members of each group drank 30 ml, 15 ml or 0 ml of this vinegar per day for 12 weeks. The people, who drank 30 ml and 15 ml, had lower BMI, waist circumference and visceral fat than those in the control group who did not drink apple cider vinegar.

It’s the ability to block starch that can help you lose weight. Carol Johnston, associate director of the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University, explains, “If you’re interfering with the digestion of starch, less is being broken down into calories in the bloodstream. Over time, that might cause a subtle effect on weight.”

Research suggests that apple cider vinegar may lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. The potassium in this vinegar helps to balance sodium levels in the body, which keeps blood pressure steady. Why Microwave Popcorn Is An Absolute Health Nightmare



If you or someone you know is still eating microwave popcorn, listen up! I can’t tell you how many countless times I used to eat microwave popcorn when I worked in an office. My co-workers would buy one of those packs from the vending machine in the break room and pop that sucker right into the microwave and the whole floor would smell DELICIOUS! I just couldn’t help myself. It was the one thing in the vending machine that always had to be refilled week after week – way before the stale peanuts.

I’m so glad I stopped that habit, when I finally gave up my use of microwaves, because let me tell you, this stuff is horrible for your health and here’s why…

 The Bag

The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.

The Contents

Here’s a snapshot of several popular popcorn brands and the ingredients they contain.

Even though there are no sources of genetically modified popcorn kernels being produced (that’s saved for other varieties of corn), there are several other GMO ingredients in the form of oil or emulsifiers to be found in these popcorn flavors. GMOs have never been tested long term on human beings and are linked to a slew of health issues that are rising in this country. All of these brands do not use organic corn either, so you can be sure they contain harmful pesticides.

Brands like PopSecret and Jolly Time still use trans fat, which is considered one of the most deadly fats available because it is associated with 20,000 heart attacks a year and over 7,000 deaths according to the CDC.

Proply Gallate that is found in PopSecret is one of those ingredients that’s being phased out in the rest of the world, but still being used here for a preservative in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It’s linked to all sorts of health issues like skin rashes, stomach issues and breathing problems.

TBHQ that is found in Smart Balance, stands for “Tertiary Butylhydroquinone.” It’s a dead giveaway that you shouldn’t be eating this, if food companies have to use an acronym for a long chemical name on the ingredient label.

TBHQ is a chemical made from butane (a very toxic gas) and can only be used at a rate of 0.02 percent of the total oil in a product. Why is there a limit to this? Maybe because eating only 1 gram of this toxic preservative has been shown to cause all sorts of issues, from ADHD in children, to asthma, allergies and dermatitis to dizziness and even has caused stomach cancer in laboratory animals.

Limiting TBHQ to a certain percentage, is the same logic the FDA made when allowing a product to still contain 0.5 grams of transfat and be labeled “transfat free.” If you are consuming processed foods, eating at fast food restaurants or chains that use processed foods you are consuming an overload of preservatives and other chemicals. The accumulation of eating all these different preservatives and man-made chemicals at once has not been studied by the food companies or the FDA for safety.

The Hidden Ingredients

Even though natural flavors and artificial flavors are listed on the ingredient label of microwave popcorn, we have no way of knowing what’s actually in these ingredients. Food manufacturers won’t tell you and they hide things in there like MSG, beaver’s anal glands and diacetyl butter flavoring. What’s so wrong with a little bit of artificial butter flavoring? Well a lot. This stuff is seriously toxic, which forced Conagra Foods to remove it from their Act branded Microwave popcorn recently because it causes lung issues in workers. This ingredient is also linked to brain issues which cause Alzheimer’s Disease too. Dr. Mercola reports:

“Researchers conducting test-tube studies revealed that diacetyl has several concerning properties for brain health. Not only can it pass through the blood-brain barrier, which is intended to help keep toxins out of your brain, but it can also cause brain proteins to misfold into the Alzheimer’s-linked form known as beta amyloid. It also inhibits mechanisms that help to naturally clear the dangerous beta amyloid from your brain.1

It’s not known at this time whether eating diacetyl-containing foods (it’s used not only in microwave popcorn but also in other snack foods, baked goods, pet foods, some fast foods and other food products) increases your risk of Alzheimer’s, but the finding that it may contribute to brain plaques linked to Alzheimer’s at very low concentrations is concerning, to say the least.

Orville Redenbacher’s label explicitly says they do not use this flavoring anymore, but there are popcorn varieties that still do, so watch out, if you see the words “artificial flavor” on the label of any processed food, back up far away!

Make Your Own (It Takes 5 mins!)

Making your own popcorn from scratch is so EASY and you can avoid all of these health pitfalls. If you need to take some to the office or where ever you are going (like sneaking it into the movie theatre), I recommend making it in advance and throwing it in a reusable bag.

This recipe takes 5 mins. The extra 2 minutes (over microwave popcorn) is time definitely worth committing to.

I call this recipe “Superfood Popcorn” because it contains three amazing ingredients:

  • Coconut oil that is great for your metabolism
  • Hemp seeds that are full of omega 3 fatty acids
  • Red palm oil that contains the highest amounts of vitamins A and E of any plant-based oil

I have to say, the red palm oil took this popcorn from about an 9 to an 11 on a scale from 1 to 10. It looks and tastes like yummy comforting butter (and the color matches that movie theatre popcorn without all the added chemical ingredients). Also, the added texture of the hemp seeds combined with sea salt is so good and crunchy.

I made a bowl of this last week and it was heavenly! It’s seriously amazing – I can’t wait to hear your reports.

Please note red palm oil is different from palm kernel oil (that is grown in SouthEast Asia and killing orangutans). Red palm oil comes from Ecuador and harvested sustainably. Food Babe’s Superfood Popcorn

Prep time: 5 mins
Cook time: 5 mins
Total time: 10 mins
Serves: 2
  • ¼ cup dry popcorn kernels
  • 1 and ½ teaspoon coconut oil
  • 2 tsp red palm oil
  • 1 tbsp hempseed ground
  • ¼ tsp celtic sea salt
  1. In a pot, stir together coconut oil and popcorn kernels and heat pot on stove to high
  2. Cover pot with lid and let popcorn pop until you hear less popping per second
  3. Once popcorn is done popping, remove from pot into a bowl
  4. Using a blender or food processor, blend hempseed and salt until fine
  5. Top popcorn with melted red palm oil and hempseed salt mixture
