This is no way to celebrate the holidays and food manufacturers know they can get away with selling you the cheapest ingredients during this time of year because they can tap into the nostalgia of the holiday season and the idea that “it’s just once a year” – but really, it’s ALL YEAR. Almost immediately after they clear the Halloween candy from their shelves, grocery stores stock up on Christmas candy and all the fast food places come out with “holiday drinks” … and then comes Valentine’s Day… and then Easter… and it just keeps going in an endless cycle of toxic seasonal treats.



New Proof That GMOs Are Harmful

Like something out of a science fiction thriller, genetically modified organisms (GMO) are having horrifying effects in lab tests.
Genetically modified corn engineered to be resistant to Roundup herbicide (a Monsanto brand) caused rapidly accelerating tumors in both male and female lab rats over the course of 2 years.
And these are no small tumors.
On  French studies “Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before controls,” the study quotes. Not to mention that “the sex hormonal balance was modified by GMO and Roundup treatments.” Oh, and don’t forget “very significant kidney chronic deficiencies.”
Meanwhile, male rats developed liver congestions and necrosis and they “presented 4 times more large palpable tumors than controls which occurred up to 600 days earlier.”
Read that finding again… 600 days earlier. The study itself was only 2 years long (730 days) which means the tumors began growing within the first few months of the test!
It’s enough to make you think twice about eating genetically modified food, especially if it is engineered to be resistant to a certain herbicide, like the Roundup resistant corn used in this study.
When a “Roundup Ready” crop is sprayed with Roundup herbicide, everything else dies, but the genetically engineered crop lives. There are many herbicide companies each with their own “brand” of GM crop that is resistant to their company’s herbicide.
FYI: Multiple applications of herbicide are common practice in herbicide-resistant GMO crops… once before the plant emerges [pre-emergent], again after the plant has established [post-emergent], at least once more during the growing season, and once again in the fall.
This means the herbicide can be sprayed on the crop over and over again without killing it — increased herbicide toxicity is all but certain with these types of crops!
The shocking findings of this French study suddenly make “Prop 37″ a crucial election decision. If you haven’t heard about Prop 37, you will soon. It’s a proposition before Californian voters that calls for mandatory labeling of GMO foods. And if California votes it in, likely the entire country will follow.

Holiday Gifts That I’m NEVER Buying (…again)

I’m embarrassed to say that several years ago I used to buy gift baskets from Mrs. Fields Cookies for some special occasions and as holiday gifts. My college girlfriends even would send me them during hard times like when I had a romantic breakup or before exams. As much as I love cookies, once I found out the truth I never spent another dime on their products. I got the complete list of ingredients in their holiday gift baskets and let me tell you, they are filled with ingredients that let’s just say, Santa would call really naughty!

Mrs. Fields Holiday Gift Baskets make the NAUGHTY LIST!

  • Partially Hydrogenated Oils – Mrs. Fields uses margarine and partially hydrogenated oils as a substitute for real butter in their cookies. While their cookies contain some butter, partially hydrogenated oils take a front seat as one of their main ingredients. These oils are the primary source of artificial trans fat in our diet, which have been shown to increase “bad” cholesterol and decrease “good” cholesterol, leading to heart disease. As reported in Scientific American, “It took decades for scientists to realize how deadly trans fats could be, partly because the food industry and the cardiovascular prevention community dismissed concerns over adverse effects on health, but the evidence continued to mount”. Finally in 2013, the FDA tentatively determined that partially hydrogenated oils are no longer GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) due to these health concerns, so no one should be eating these oils – even during the holidays!
  • Mono & Diglycerides – This is another (somewhat sneaky) source of harmful trans fat.
  • Soybean Oil – This oil is heavily processed and almost always extracted with the neurotoxin hexane, a cheap byproduct from gasoline production. It’s also high in omega-6 fatty acids (which the American diet is too full of) increasing the risk of inflammation, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) – Your body doesn’t process HFCS the same as regular sugar (sucrose), and excessive high fructose corn syrup consumption has been shown to increase the risk of developing diabetes.
  • Enriched Bleached Flour – This is the worst type of flour because it’s been stripped of fiber and nutrients, and comes from a heavily hybridized wheat crop, which may have been pre-harvested with Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide.
  • Parabens – Mrs. Fields cut-out frosted holiday cookies include methylparaben and propylparaben as ingredients. You may have heard about these ingredients in cosmetics, shampoo and lotions, but not realize they are in food too. Parabens have been found to be endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are linked to breast cancer (sources: 1, 2, 3, 4), and reproductive problems. This ingredient made the EWG’s top 12 dirty dozen food additives – which means it’s one of the worst food additives in existence!
  • Genetically Modified Ingredients? – Several of the ingredients used by Mrs. Fields typically come from genetically modified (GMO) crops. When we called Mrs. Fields customer service and asked whether they use any GMO ingredients, the agent did not seem to understand what we were asking. They have not responded to email requests. I will update you here when (and if) they respond. These ingredients are often derived from GMOs and can be found in Mrs. Fields holiday gifts: Sugar, Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Soybean Oil, Mono & Diglycerides, Soy Lecithin, Citric Acid, Cornstarch, Canola Oil, Fructose, Xanthan Gum, Cottonseed Oil, Glycerin, Food Starch.

Why Microwave Popcorn Is An Absolute Health Nightmare



If you or someone you know is still eating microwave popcorn, listen up! I can’t tell you how many countless times I used to eat microwave popcorn when I worked in an office. My co-workers would buy one of those packs from the vending machine in the break room and pop that sucker right into the microwave and the whole floor would smell DELICIOUS! I just couldn’t help myself. It was the one thing in the vending machine that always had to be refilled week after week – way before the stale peanuts.

I’m so glad I stopped that habit, when I finally gave up my use of microwaves, because let me tell you, this stuff is horrible for your health and here’s why…

 The Bag

The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.

The Contents

Here’s a snapshot of several popular popcorn brands and the ingredients they contain.

Even though there are no sources of genetically modified popcorn kernels being produced (that’s saved for other varieties of corn), there are several other GMO ingredients in the form of oil or emulsifiers to be found in these popcorn flavors. GMOs have never been tested long term on human beings and are linked to a slew of health issues that are rising in this country. All of these brands do not use organic corn either, so you can be sure they contain harmful pesticides.

Brands like PopSecret and Jolly Time still use trans fat, which is considered one of the most deadly fats available because it is associated with 20,000 heart attacks a year and over 7,000 deaths according to the CDC.

Proply Gallate that is found in PopSecret is one of those ingredients that’s being phased out in the rest of the world, but still being used here for a preservative in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It’s linked to all sorts of health issues like skin rashes, stomach issues and breathing problems.

TBHQ that is found in Smart Balance, stands for “Tertiary Butylhydroquinone.” It’s a dead giveaway that you shouldn’t be eating this, if food companies have to use an acronym for a long chemical name on the ingredient label.

TBHQ is a chemical made from butane (a very toxic gas) and can only be used at a rate of 0.02 percent of the total oil in a product. Why is there a limit to this? Maybe because eating only 1 gram of this toxic preservative has been shown to cause all sorts of issues, from ADHD in children, to asthma, allergies and dermatitis to dizziness and even has caused stomach cancer in laboratory animals.

Limiting TBHQ to a certain percentage, is the same logic the FDA made when allowing a product to still contain 0.5 grams of transfat and be labeled “transfat free.” If you are consuming processed foods, eating at fast food restaurants or chains that use processed foods you are consuming an overload of preservatives and other chemicals. The accumulation of eating all these different preservatives and man-made chemicals at once has not been studied by the food companies or the FDA for safety.

The Hidden Ingredients

Even though natural flavors and artificial flavors are listed on the ingredient label of microwave popcorn, we have no way of knowing what’s actually in these ingredients. Food manufacturers won’t tell you and they hide things in there like MSG, beaver’s anal glands and diacetyl butter flavoring. What’s so wrong with a little bit of artificial butter flavoring? Well a lot. This stuff is seriously toxic, which forced Conagra Foods to remove it from their Act branded Microwave popcorn recently because it causes lung issues in workers. This ingredient is also linked to brain issues which cause Alzheimer’s Disease too. Dr. Mercola reports:

“Researchers conducting test-tube studies revealed that diacetyl has several concerning properties for brain health. Not only can it pass through the blood-brain barrier, which is intended to help keep toxins out of your brain, but it can also cause brain proteins to misfold into the Alzheimer’s-linked form known as beta amyloid. It also inhibits mechanisms that help to naturally clear the dangerous beta amyloid from your brain.1

It’s not known at this time whether eating diacetyl-containing foods (it’s used not only in microwave popcorn but also in other snack foods, baked goods, pet foods, some fast foods and other food products) increases your risk of Alzheimer’s, but the finding that it may contribute to brain plaques linked to Alzheimer’s at very low concentrations is concerning, to say the least.

Orville Redenbacher’s label explicitly says they do not use this flavoring anymore, but there are popcorn varieties that still do, so watch out, if you see the words “artificial flavor” on the label of any processed food, back up far away!

Make Your Own (It Takes 5 mins!)

Making your own popcorn from scratch is so EASY and you can avoid all of these health pitfalls. If you need to take some to the office or where ever you are going (like sneaking it into the movie theatre), I recommend making it in advance and throwing it in a reusable bag.

This recipe takes 5 mins. The extra 2 minutes (over microwave popcorn) is time definitely worth committing to.

I call this recipe “Superfood Popcorn” because it contains three amazing ingredients:

  • Coconut oil that is great for your metabolism
  • Hemp seeds that are full of omega 3 fatty acids
  • Red palm oil that contains the highest amounts of vitamins A and E of any plant-based oil

I have to say, the red palm oil took this popcorn from about an 9 to an 11 on a scale from 1 to 10. It looks and tastes like yummy comforting butter (and the color matches that movie theatre popcorn without all the added chemical ingredients). Also, the added texture of the hemp seeds combined with sea salt is so good and crunchy.

I made a bowl of this last week and it was heavenly! It’s seriously amazing – I can’t wait to hear your reports.

Please note red palm oil is different from palm kernel oil (that is grown in SouthEast Asia and killing orangutans). Red palm oil comes from Ecuador and harvested sustainably.   • ¼ cup dry popcorn kernels
  • 1 and ½ teaspoon coconut oil
  • 2 tsp red palm oil
  • 1 tbsp hempseed ground
  • ¼ tsp celtic sea salt
  1. In a pot, stir together coconut oil and popcorn kernels and heat pot on stove to high
  2. Cover pot with lid and let popcorn pop until you hear less popping per second
  3. Once popcorn is done popping, remove from pot into a bowl
  4. Using a blender or food processor, blend hempseed and salt until fine
  5. Top popcorn with melted red palm oil and hempseed salt mixture

What is a GMO? Let me quickly explain…

What is a GMO? Its simply a Genetically Modified Organism. For example if a cotton seed plant has its DNA modified to protect it from hash growing climates, that it has been modified at the DNA level and is a Genetically Modified Organism. These GMO’s are placed into the DNA of plants like corn, soy and cotton. They then help the plants fight off bugs and other potential risks, and in turn ensure a stable yield for farmers.

5 Good Reasons to Stop Drinking Soda Immediately

If drinking soda is one of your guilty (or not so guilty) pleasures, you should pause to think about what you’re really putting in your body each time you take a sip. Soft drinks — especially diet ones — are among the worst things you can put in your body. Drinking them will make you sick, fat and stupid. Let me explain why…

Soda has been around for a very long time, so you may ask why, if it’s really so bad for us, we aren’t all dead yet. The fact is, the bottles of soda we’re drinking today are vastly different from — and vastly larger than — sodas of the past. Did you know that the original Coca-Cola bottle held only 6.5 ounces? And that for most people, drinking one was a special treat enjoyed on an occasional basis? Compare that to the common 20-ounce size that tens of millions of Americans now consume on a daily basis.

Size aside, the sodas of yesteryear were a relatively simple concoction of carbonated water,sugar, natural flavoring agents and naturally occurring acids. Compare this to most of today’s sodas, which are awash in highly refined sweeteners, synthetic additives, GMOs and other toxins that were never meant to be inside a human body. The results of this have been devastating to our health. Anyone who wants to live a long, healthy and productive life should reconsider any soda drinking habit that involves more than occasional consumption. Ideally, you should avoid drinking soda entirely.

Here are 5 good reasons to stop drinking soda right away:

1. Formulated to make you fat: Firstly, soda has virtually no nutritional value whatsoever. Zip, zero zilch. If you’re trying to cut down on calories, eliminating soda is a no-brainer. There are just no benefits other than the taste – and there are lots of healthy, great tasting alternatives (as I explain below). Beyond the empty calories, research shows that the high fructose corn syrup found in soft drinks actually triggers a hunger hormone that causes you to consume more food than your body needs. Other research reveals disruptions to microflora in the intestines that could decrease nutrient absorption – meaning you need to eat more food to get the same nutrients. Lastly, if you think you’re doing yourself a favor by drinking diet soda, think again. You may have heard about the recent Purdue University study that linked diet sodas to the very same health problems caused by their sugary counterparts, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In fact, multiple studies show that that drinking diet soda actually makes you fatter! But you don’t need science to prove that. Look around at the people drinking diet soda and ask yourself whether the “diet” is working.

2. Genetically modified mayhem: In the old days, soda was sweetened with natural cane sugar. I’m not saying sugar is necessarily good for you, but the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) used today in most sodas makes cane sugar seem like a health food by comparison. One of the biggest problems with HFCS is that, since it’s derived from corn, and since most corn in the U.S. is genetically modified, its likely chock full of GMOs. Now Big Agra, Big Food and the Federal Government will tell you that GMO foods will save the world and guarantee a bountiful food supply. But remember, most corn has been genetically modified for a sole purpose – so it can survive being sprayed with ungodly amounts of pesticides and herbicides that would kill most living things. It’s a certainty that toxic residues of these pesticides and herbicides end up in the products made from corn, including HFCS. Toxins aside, GMOs are essentially a foreign body (a new strand of DNA) that your body doesn’t recognize, and more and more studies are surfacing linking GMOs to major health risks.

3. A bubbly bottle of carcinogens: The consumption of soda is skyrocketing in this country. At the same time, cancer rates are on the rise across the spectrum. Is there a connection? Many sodas get their dark hue from what manufacturers call “caramel color.” Sounds innocuous right? Unfortunately, the synthetic chemicals used to make this coloring have been found to be carcinogenic according to consumer watchdog group, Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). Many countries have banned their use, but not the U.S. If the cancer-causing coloring isn’t enough to scare you, then consider the fact that diet sodas give you a deadly double whammy. In addition to the carcinogenic coloring, you also get artificial sweeteners, which are well-established carcinogens. Lastly, some believe that the GMOs that may be swimming in your soda are playing a role in the rising rates of cancer.

4. Really tasty toxins: The world is awash in toxins, so if you can avoid drinking them you should. Oh where to start… Firstly, whether your soda comes in a plastic bottle or aluminum can, chances are the container is made or coated with BPA or a BPA derivative that is known to cause a variety of health problems. Secondly, most sodas are produced with low quality, unfiltered municipal tap water, which may contain undesirable levels of industrial runoff, pharmaceutical drug residues and other chemicals. Also, the HFCS used in most soda is highly processed and known to contain industrial chemical residues, including mercury. In fact, one study found mercury in over 50% of samples tested! Oh yeah, then there’s the fire retardant. Yep, many sodas contain an innocuous ingredient called “brominated vegetable oil,” which is widely used as a fire retardant in many industrial applications. At least you know your soda won’t catch fire.

5. Heart attacks, strokes and depression, oh my!: The health consequences of drinking soda are numerous, but some are less obvious than others. For example, most people correlate soda consumption with obesity. And most people know that obesity is associated with a plethora of health problems including diabetes, hypertension and premature death. But you don’t need to be obese to experience the negative effects of soda. One study links the consumption of non-diet soda to a 20% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. Another study showed that just one sugary beverage per day may significantly increase the risk of heart attacks. So is diet soda the solution? Not so fast. Other research links diet soda consumption with a 61% increase in strokes and heart attacks. Also, the artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas are known neurotoxins that can cause behavioral and cognitive problems. Speaking of your mind, not feeling so happy these days? One study shows that those who consume sweetened drinks face a higher risk of depression. The risk was shown to be even higher for those who drink diet sodas.

Oh boy those were the days! This was a time period in my life where I was easily fooled by deceptive marketing I saw in persuasive, too-good-to-be-true messaging in commercials and on packages. I knew basically nothing about real food, GMOs, or chemically processed ingredients and I was sick.

Some say ignorance is bliss, considering all the alarming information there is to know about food these days and products to watch out for. But let me ask you, do you call living with chronic illnesses (asthma, allergies, endometriosis, and eczema) and being on several prescription drugs in your 20’s, bliss?

No, no one would.

That’s why when I saw the recent commercial for the new Lean Cuisine meals called “honestly good” with the words “100% all natural” slapped on the package, I had to investigate. These meals promise all whole foods with whole grains, but when you look at the ingredient list, they have ingredients from the top 4 genetically engineered crops (corn, canola, soy and sugar beets). How can they call this product natural? Are they truly sourcing natural ingredients that aren’t developed in a laboratory? Well, I wanted to find out, so I called the headquarters.

The customer service representative confirmed that there is a 70-80% likelihood that any and all Lean Cuisine products (including this Honestly Good line) contain GMOs and could not guarantee their product labeled 100% natural is free of GMOs. They also directed me to a website that was created by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) that is funded by Big Food, and Biotech companies like Monsanto. These are the same companies giving millions and millions of dollars to stop GMO labeling. This makes me wonder how many customer service representatives are instructed by their employers (BIG food companies) to spread this mass misinformation campaign to consumers. It’s absolutely atrocious.

As you can see below, the entire list of ingredients for each flavor has suspected GMOs – but for some reason (you can thank the FDA for the lack of regulation) they are allowed to put not just “all natural “– but “100% all natural” on the label.

Lean Cuisine sources their ingredients “domestically when possible.” It’s startling to see how many potential GMO ingredients there are in their new product line.

How are companies getting away with labeling an entire product line 100% all natural and still using GMOs?! Well, they are not exactly getting away with this. Even though the FDA does not have a strict definition around what natural means, these companies are being sued left and right because they are misleading the consumer with false advertising and claims.

Since the FDA is asleep at the wheel, any lawyers out there want to take this on?

Labeling a product 100% all natural and not being able to verify it (see video above), is extremely unfair to the consumer. This is fraudulent and irresponsible marketing that Lean Cuisine and parent company Nestle need to be held accountable for.

How long do you think it will be before Nestle/Lean Cuisine joins the ranks of General Mills (Nature Valley GranolaBars), Conagra (Wesson Oil), Pepsi (Naked Juice), Frito-Lay (Tostitos and Sun Chips), Kashi (Cereal),Barbara’s Bakery (Cereal), Pepperidge Farm (Gold Fish), etc? All of these companies have been or being sued for mislabeling their products as “all natural” when really their products contain synthetic material or GMOs.

To avoid GMOs, choose products with the USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified labels and remember, 100% natural does not equal GMO free. Review the product list above and see the items listed in red, if the product is conventional or marked natural, it likely contains GMOs. One of the most unsuspecting ingredients is “sugar” that comes from GMO sugar beets (unless listed as cane sugar) and “natural flavor” that usually starts with a base of GMO corn (and can also contain beaver anal secretions – ewwww!). Also, hidden GMOs can be found in any meat product that is labeled “all natural” because it is likely raised with GMO feed. Here’s a full list of common GMO ingredients.

7 Reasons to Throw Out Your Regular Flour and Replace it with Coconut Flour

Today in the Western world, white flour is the base of nearly every baked good you will come across. While those cookies and fresh breads may be delicious, many health experts agree that wheat, and the refined, bleached flour that is derived from it, is a major player in the obesity epidemic, as well as a range of chronic illnesses.

Fortunately, there is a remarkably healthy, delicious alternative: organic coconut flour. This flour is made from the meat of organic coconuts, which is dried, separated from much of its fat content, and ground.

The following are seven reasons to strongly consider making the switch from the white, all-purpose stuff to organic coconut flour.

1. White (and wheat) flour contains gluten

Individuals with celiac disease know all-too-well the damage that gluten, a protein found wheat, barley and rye, can cause. Those suffering from celiac disease (about one percent of the population) experience severe inflammation, damage to the small intestine and malabsorption of nutrients when they consume gluten. However, what about everyone else?

It is estimated that up to 30 percent of the world has some degree of gluten sensitivity, and many do not know it. Gluten sensitivity can cause a wide range of symptoms, including digestive distress and chronic fatigue, which may be difficult to trace back to gluten. Other individuals may experience allergic reactions to wheat.

Coconut flour, however, is gluten free, and considered highly hypoallergenic. So, unless you’re allergic to coconut, this is a very mild, non-inflammatory flour to use.

2. Wheat flours are addictive

Gliadin, one protein component in wheat, has been found to be highly addictive. It stimulates the appetite, and leads to cravings for more and more wheat. This is one reason why it is so easy to over-snack on baked goods. Needless to say, this is particularly bad for your waistline.

Additionally, wheat contains a carbohydrate known as Amylopectin A, which is linked to rapid spikes in blood sugar, much like those which occur when we eat sugar. For this reason, eating wheat may raise your risk of insulin resistance and belly fat, as well as result in digestive discomfort.

3. White flour is bleached and treated with various chemicals

Leading health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola explains that today’s wheat is doused in chemical pesticides during all stages of its growth, starting with the seed. It is also sometimes sprayed with “plant growth regulators,” which may mimic hormonal activity.

To make refined, all-purpose flour, wheat is bleached, and as a result of this, the nutrients that were contained in the original wheat are largely processed out.

4. Modern wheat itself is often cross-bred with potential toxins

When wheat is grown nowadays, it is often cross-bred with various substances. One example is Clearfield Wheat, which is crossbred with sodium azide, a toxic chemical used in industrial applications. Other wheat strains are radiated in order to trigger mutations to achieve higher yields.

5. Coconut flour is rich in nutrients

While white flour barely has any nutrients to speak of, coconut flour is rich in protein, and contains coconut oil, which is one of the healthiest fat sources on Earth.

This flour is also rich in dietary fiber, much of which is insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is crucial to healthy digestion, as it adds bulk to stool, helps alleviate constipation and protects the colon from damage. It also creates a satiating effect, making you feel full longer after you eat it.

6. Coconut flour is great for achieving and maintaining an ideal weight

Due to its high fiber content, healthy baked goods made with coconut flour can be great for a weight loss plan. Instead of eating the whole box of cookies – which one might with cookies made with white flour – you will likely feel full with much less.

Also, as coconut flour does not contain inflammatory gluten, it will not trigger weight gain and does not spike blood sugar.

7.  Coconut flour tastes great!

Any bread or baked dessert can be enhanced by the light consistency and mild tropical flavor of coconut flour. Not only is coconut flour healthy, it also tastes wonderful.

Keep in mind that when you switch to coconut flour, you will have to modify your recipes accordingly – you cannot simply switch the exact amount of white flour that a recipe calls for with coconut flour, the ratios will be different.

However, the Internet gives us access to a wealth of great recipes, and with a little practice, baking with this delicious flour will soon become second nature.



Trusting Your Skin to Coconut Oil Like Islanders Have for 1000′s of Years

While you may be convinced that coconut oil is a fad, it is a fad that has benefited people around the world for thousands of years, and one we feel is well worth exploring. Lauric acid has a long history of use in fighting pathogens, backed by research that is over 50 years. Coconut oil is the richest source of lauric acid on the planet.

There are numerous peer-reviewed studies noting the health benefits of one of nature’s most valuable gifts. If, after you read this article, you are still inclined to think that coconut oil is just a passing fad, we encourage you to try it – we believe you will become convinced of its value, as well.

Coconut oil is no stranger to people in the tropics, who have been using it for a very long time. Even when the anti-saturated fat war waged in America, it did not stop people in the tropics from benefiting from the healing powers of coconut oil.

Coconut oil is composed of medium chain fatty acids (MCT’s) which are not easily broken down or oxidized like polyunsaturated fat. This means that coconut oil does not cause any free radical damage, unlike polyunsaturated and dangerous trans fats.

The fact that most of our skin care products in this country are made from polyunsaturated oils explains why we, as a nation, suffer from so many skin complications. There is a great body of growing evidence to support the fact that topical application of coconut oil as well as consumption are highly beneficial.


Coconut oil is natural, and that means that not many people want to conduct extensive research into its benefits. However, a study conducted in 2008 at the Skin and Cancer Foundation in the Philippines, compared virgin coconut oil and virgin olive oil in moisturizing dryness and removing bacteria from colonized Atopic dermatitis skin.

The study, a double-blind controlled trial, found that coconut oil was more effective than olive oil in killing bacteria, mostly because of its lauric acid content.

A 2009 study at the Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Diego, looked at the antimicrobial properties of lauric acid and its potential to heal acne. The results were favorable for using lauric acid in place of antibiotics for treatment of acne.

Vitamin D Helps Fight Against Skin Cancer

If you have ever known a Filipino person, you know that they likely have a lovely, youthful complexion and soft, wrinkle-free skin, despite the fact that they live in a climate that exposes them to the sun’s hot rays all year round. Skin cancer is virtually unheard of in the Philippines, where coconut oil is the main dietary oil used and the main ingredient in all of their skin care products.

In the United States, we run scared from the sun, covering every square inch of exposed skin with lotions, lathers and sprays thinking that we are doing the right thing to protect ourselves from the damaging rays of the scorching sun. We are constantly bombarded with reasons why we need to use sunscreen, which blocks out the skin’s ability to absorb vitamin D. Interestingly enough, vitamin D has been proven to prevent cancer.

Coconut oil is the main reason why people in the tropics can be in the sun and not experience skin cancer. Its healing antioxidant powers protect the skin from free radical damage. In addition, using coconut oil on the skin helps our bodies absorb other nutrients more effectively, such as vitamin E, which is another skin protecting antioxidant.

coconut oilNow, don’t think that you can be crazy and lay in the sun all day, even with coconut oil on your skin. You still have to be smart about the sun. Stay clear of the sun during the hottest time of the day between noon and 3pm, if possible. Vitamin D production is important, but it only takes a little while per day in the sun to get what you need.

The evidence that commercial sunscreen does more harm than good is very compelling. Sunscreen contains dangerous chemicals that keep the skin from breathing, and blocks beneficial sun rays. The false security that this multi-million dollar business provides is horrifying. Why not switch to an all natural, safe and effective alternative?

As always, we recommend using only extra virgin organic coconut oil.
