This Is What Chicken McNuggets Are Made Of, According To McDonald’s

 | By Carly Ledbetter
It’s something you’ve probably wondered far too often when chowing down on McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets — what are these actually made of? Is there even chicken in here?

According to McDonald’s, the answer is still yes, as stated in yet another video in the fast-food chain’s transparency campaign. In the new video, similar to the one on how McRibs are made, host Grant Imahara ventures to Tyson Foods in Tennessee to get the inside scoop for viewers.

The video touches on some pretty tough subjects, like those nasty pink slime accusations McDonald’s faced in 2012, and Imahara’s nearly perfect description of how people think Chicken Nuggets are made: “People think that you just come to this giant factory, you have a bin of chickens that you just put into a grinder, you grind ’em up and you pour that into a mold, [squeezing noise] and that’s what you use to make a Chicken McNugget.”

Here are some important moments in the video:

1. Shots of the workers slicing up chicken

2. When we saw something that looked like pink slime

3. When we met “the machine that combines all of the ingredients together”

4. This comparison of pink slime to the final products

5. Seeing nuggets get breaded and battered

6. Getting a final look at the nuggets before they get flash frozen

7. When Imahara grinned like the world’s greatest mystery had been solved

Though we applaud McDonald’s for trying to be transparent and promoting their nuggets as natural — we can’t help but be skeptical of this video (also suspiciously released the day we learned of more declining sales for the brand). We’re still not quite convinced of Imahara’s enthusiasm or the chicken wisdom that’s being fed to us. Maybe next time, Mickey D’s?

Aspartame: The Bitter Truth Behind This Toxic Sweetener

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr. John W. Olney and consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974, as well as investigations of G.D. Searle’s research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious, including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as part of aspartame dangers are:

Dizziness Seizures Nausea Numbness
Muscle spasms Weight gain Rashes Depression Fatigue
Irritability Tachycardia Insomnia Vision problems Hearing loss
Heart palpitations Breathing difficulties Anxiety attacks Slurred speech Loss of taste
Tinnitus Vertigo Memory loss Joint pain

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:

Brain tumors Multiple sclerosis Epilepsy Chronic fatigue syndrome Parkinson’s disease
Alzheimer’s Mental retardation Lymphoma Birth defects Fibromyalgia

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, by James and Phyllis Balch lists aspartame under the category of “chemical poison.” As you shall see, that is exactly what it is.

What Is Aspartame Made Of?

Aspartic Acid (40 percent of Aspartame)

Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, recently published a book thoroughly detailing the damage that is caused by the ingestion of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. Blaylock makes use of almost 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid (about 99 percent of monosodium glutamate or MSG is glutamic acid) in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.

How Aspartate (and Glutamate) Cause Damage

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as “excitotoxins.” They “excite” or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins), it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

The blood brain barrier (BBB), which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins, 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions, and 4) allows seepage of excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.

The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) Parkinson’s disease
ALS Hypoglycemia
Memory loss AIDS
Hormonal problems Dementia
Epilepsy Brain lesions
Alzheimer’s disease Neuroendocrine disorders

aspartame effectThe risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimics the FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age.

Aspartic acid from aspartame has the same deleterious effects on the body as glutamic acid isolated from it’s naturally protein-bound state, causing it to become a neurotoxin instead of a non-essential amino acid.

Aspartame in diet sodas, or aspartame in other liquid form are absorbed more quickly and have been shown to spike plasma levels of aspartic acid.

The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamate and aspartate is currently being debated.

As reported to the FDA, those reactions include:

Headaches/migraines Fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain) Anxiety attacks
Nausea Sleep problems Depression
Abdominal pains Vision problems Asthma/chest tightness

One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Ironically, in 1987, G.D. Searle, the manufacturer of aspartame, undertook a search for a drug to combat memory loss caused by excitatory amino acid damage. Blaylock is one of many scientists and physicians who are concerned about excitatory amino acid damage caused by ingestion of aspartame and MSG.

A few of the many experts who have spoken out against the damage being caused by aspartate and glutamate include Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist specializing in research design. Another is Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on excitotoxins. (He informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brains of mice.)

How Dehydration Is Killing Your Performance at the Office + Gym

Sometimes health advice gets preachy. Especially the “eight glasses of water a day” adage. Like, stop nagging already, right? But, it turns out there’s major truth to this one. This transparent, tasteless liquid holds the key to your mood, cognition, cardiovascular output, and even your lifespan. So, what purpose does all that H20 really serve? And why are eight glasses so necessary?

We dug into the fascinating biology of why water improves your heart, mind, and treadmill sprint. It’s time to get down with viscosity.

Dehydration makes you crabby & distracted

What are the signs and symptoms of dehydration? It’s not just thirst. These two studies found dehydrated participants felt anxious and unfocused. The experiments measured vigilance, concentration, reaction time, learning, memory, and reasoning in both a hydrated and dehydrated state.

The dehydrated participants experienced headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, increased tension, and anxiety. Amazing, right? Imagine next time you’re feeling annoyed or frazzled – you could just need a glass of water.

What’s more, the studies show that dehydration is not just a gym concern. Mild dehydration will sneak up on you over the course of a work day. The University of Connecticut reports, “The tests showed that it didn’t matter if a person had just walked for 40 minutes on a treadmill or was sitting at rest – the adverse effects from mild dehydration were the same.”

The study’s lead author, Lawrence E. Armstrong, said, “Staying properly hydrated is just as important for those who work all day at a computer as it is for marathon runners, who can lose up to 8 percent of their body weight as water when they compete.”

Without adequate hydration, bodies can experience more muscle soreness, the need for longer recovery times and less desire to push oneself – in short, dehydration can make you feel less motivated to achieve at any activity. –

Dehydration makes you physically weaker

If you don’t properly hydrate, you’re restricting one of the most precious resources to the heart: blood flow. That’s gonna really eff up your workout. Dehydration impairs your heart’s performance in three ways:

  • Lowers your potential max

It reduces your “maximum cardiac output,” the highest pumping capacity your heart can achieve during exercise.

  • Reduces blood volume

Dehydration decreases plasma volume. This leads to an increase in blood thickness (viscosity), which lowers the blood pressure in your veins. When your blood pressure is reduced, your heart doesn’t have the “oomph” it needs to return blood into the ventricles. When you go hard on the cardio equipment, this reduced blood volume means your heart doesn’t have the strength to “fill up” between heartbeats (known as the diastole phase in the cardiac cycle).

That means you won’t have the endurance or strength you normally do when fully hydrated. Heavy.

statistical-heart-model-factor-75Super cool 4D model of the left and right heart ventricles. Improper hydration shortens the rest phase of the cardiac cycle.

  • Inhibits ability to cool down

As your body tries to conserve water, it decreases your sweat rate. This causes you to overheat, which in turn raises your core temperature. This increases the rate of muscle glycogen use, making your body less efficient – meaning you’ll hit the wall faster.

If you feel thirsty, it’s already too late

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to reach for your Nalgene. That’s why experts push the mythic eight glasses a day. We get dehydrated fast! If you don’t drink regularly, you’ll start experiencing the cognitive and physical repercussions of dehydration at one percent water loss. If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re probably already at two percent water loss.

What is a GMO? Let me quickly explain…

What is a GMO? Its simply a Genetically Modified Organism. For example if a cotton seed plant has its DNA modified to protect it from hash growing climates, that it has been modified at the DNA level and is a Genetically Modified Organism. These GMO’s are placed into the DNA of plants like corn, soy and cotton. They then help the plants fight off bugs and other potential risks, and in turn ensure a stable yield for farmers.

That’s great for farmers, but not so much for the rest of us. GMO based food has been proven to cause cancer in rats and other animals in numerous studies. There is really no governance on labeling or on usage. The net result is that the very food we eat could be doing us significant harm.

90% of all foods now contain some or one GMO component. Everything from wheat, to milk to bacon, are affected, as base crops like soy, corn and wheat are used in almost every processed food.

This situation must be rectified. The only way it can happen is by knowledge and education. If you are looking for more information on GMO’s and the need for better labeling, please take the time and lean more about GMOs, GMO labeling and GMO Food. 100% All Natural Products Can Be Chock Full Of GMOs (A MUST READ!!!)

By Food Babe

Watch the video below to find out what happens. You’ll be shocked at the information and website the customer service agent directs me to learn about GMOs.

Please note: I received permission to record this call from the Lean Cuisine Headquarters. I have the video on file if anyone requests.

As a consumer, it’s shocking to find out 100% all natural products can be chock full of GMOs.

I used to eat a lot of Lean Cuisine frozen meals back in the day. I was right out of college and wanted quick, easy and calorie controlled dinners I could have after work, which would take zero effort after my long days as a management consultant. All my girlfriends were doing it, we’d share with each other which new flavors were the best and talk about how low the calorie count was. I’d pop that sucker right into the microwave, in it’s plastic wrapping and bowl and have (what I thought at the time) a decent ready to eat meal that was healthy and “lean”.

Oh boy those were the days! This was a time period in my life where I was easily fooled by deceptive marketing I saw in persuasive, too-good-to-be-true messaging in commercials and on packages. I knew basically nothing about real food, GMOs, or chemically processed ingredients and I was sick.

Some say ignorance is bliss, considering all the alarming information there is to know about food these days and products to watch out for. But let me ask you, do you call living with chronic illnesses (asthma, allergies, endometriosis, and eczema) and being on several prescription drugs in your 20’s, bliss?

No, no one would.

That’s why when I saw the recent commercial for the new Lean Cuisine meals called “honestly good” with the words “100% all natural” slapped on the package, I had to investigate. These meals promise all whole foods with whole grains, but when you look at the ingredient list, they have ingredients from the top 4 genetically engineered crops (corn, canola, soy and sugar beets). How can they call this product natural? Are they truly sourcing natural ingredients that aren’t developed in a laboratory? Well, I wanted to find out, so I called the headquarters.

The customer service representative confirmed that there is a 70-80% likelihood that any and all Lean Cuisine products (including this Honestly Good line) contain GMOs and could not guarantee their product labeled 100% natural is free of GMOs. They also directed me to a website that was created by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) that is funded by Big Food, and Biotech companies like Monsanto. These are the same companies giving millions and millions of dollars to stop GMO labeling. This makes me wonder how many customer service representatives are instructed by their employers (BIG food companies) to spread this mass misinformation campaign to consumers. It’s absolutely atrocious.

Lean Cuisine Honestly Good

As you can see below, the entire list of ingredients for each flavor has suspected GMOs – but for some reason (you can thank the FDA for the lack of regulation) they are allowed to put not just “all natural “– but “100% all natural” on the label.

Lean Cuisine sources their ingredients “domestically when possible.” It’s startling to see how many potential GMO ingredients there are in their new product line.

The proof is on the label.

Lean Cuisine Red Pepper

Lean Cuisine Plum Fish

Lean Cuisine Pomegranate Chicken

Lean Cuisine Lemongrass

Lean Cuisine Beef

How are companies getting away with labeling an entire product line 100% all natural and still using GMOs?! Well, they are not exactly getting away with this. Even though the FDA does not have a strict definition around what natural means, these companies are being sued left and right because they are misleading the consumer with false advertising and claims.

Since the FDA is asleep at the wheel, any lawyers out there want to take this on?

Labeling a product 100% all natural and not being able to verify it (see video above), is extremely unfair to the consumer. This is fraudulent and irresponsible marketing that Lean Cuisine and parent company Nestle need to be held accountable for.

How long do you think it will be before Nestle/Lean Cuisine joins the ranks of General Mills (Nature Valley GranolaBars), Conagra (Wesson Oil), Pepsi (Naked Juice), Frito-Lay (Tostitos and Sun Chips), Kashi (Cereal),Barbara’s Bakery (Cereal), Pepperidge Farm (Gold Fish), etc? All of these companies have been or being sued for mislabeling their products as “all natural” when really their products contain synthetic material or GMOs.

Contact Lean Cuisine and tell them what you think at 1-800-993-8625 or facebook message them.

GMOs are not found in nature! The DNA has been altered in a laboratory.

GMOs increases the use of toxic chemicals in our environment, kill bees and are linked to cancer, allergies and autoimmune disorders in animal studies.

To avoid GMOs, choose products with the USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified labels and remember, 100% natural does not equal GMO free. Review the product list above and see the items listed in red, if the product is conventional or marked natural, it likely contains GMOs. One of the most unsuspecting ingredients is “sugar” that comes from GMO sugar beets (unless listed as cane sugar) and “natural flavor” that usually starts with a base of GMO corn (and can also contain beaver anal secretions – ewwww!). Also, hidden GMOs can be found in any meat product that is labeled “all natural” because it is likely raised with GMO feed. Here’s a full list of common GMO ingredients.

If you know someone who’s buying “natural” products or perhaps eating Lean Cuisine or other frozen meals, share this video and information with them. We all need to spread the truth.

Food Babe

UPDATE: Shortly after this post went live, Lean Cuisine posted an announcement on their facebook page to a community of 500,000 fans confirming they use GMOs. Furthermore, they did not show up at the Natural Products Expo East trade show where they were previously supposed to showcase their new product. I went to their booth to ask questions and the booth was empty! Make em’ run #FoodBabeArmy! Make em’ run! We are winning!

Food Matters Official Trailer (Recommended Movie)

“Let thy Food be thy Medicine and thy Medicine be thy Food.” — Hippocrates

That’s the message from the founding father of modern medicine echoed in the controversial new documentary film ‘Food Matters’ from first-
time Producer-Directors James Colqhuoun and Laurentine ten Bosch.

“With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what’s wrong with
our malnourished bodies, it’s no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. ‘Food Matters’ sets about uncovering the trillion dollar
worldwide “Sickness Industry” and giving people some scientifically verifiable solutions for curing disease naturally.” – James

And in what promises to be the most contentious idea put forward, the filmmakers have interviewed several world leaders in nutrition and natural healing who claim that not only are we harming our bodies with improper nutrition, but that the right kind of foods, supplements and detoxification can be used to treat chronic illnesses as fatal as terminally diagnosed cancer.
